Our Journey
Ecocentric Futures is a research collective based at the University of York in the UK, working at the forefront of transformative thinking for a regenerative world.
Our work began within the interdisciplinary initiative FixOurFood, growing from its ambition to understand and redesign food systems. From there, our focus expanded as we recognised that transformation of the interconnected systems that shape our lives can only be achieved through addressing fundamental issues around how we relate to others, who we believe we are, and how we act. This includes what it means to shift from individualised and human-centred to collective and ecocentric ways of being and doing.
Today, our research explores how transformative change towards ecocentrism can be understood and enacted in practice. We investigate what it takes to shift entrenched societal systems toward regenerative futures that recognise human life and planetary health as inseparable. This includes examining how systemic change can be enabled and brought into coherence, what characterises regenerative systems and patterns, how ways of organising can support transformation, and how shifts towards more holistic and relational consciousness may emerge.
We approach our work with humility, recognising that supporting transformations in the world requires a commitment to our own transformation, learning and evolution. We also recognise that ecocentric ways of being call for the development of diverse and profound forms of knowledge and wisdom. We actively encourage work at the confluence of science, wider ways of knowing, and the sacred.
