Where can we find regenerative dynamics?

‘Regenerative’ dynamics might seem distant, visionary, radical and unattainable. A fluffy pie-in-the-sky idea. A greenwashed buzzword. An implausible contrast from the degenerative dynamics that underpin today’s global crises, and that we are bombarded with in the mainstream media.


But Ecocentric Futures’ exploration of regenerative dynamics has taught us two crucial things.


Firstly, regenerative dynamics are ubiquitous and take place all around us and within us.


Regenerative dynamics are a core pattern of life itself. We see these dynamics in cells, organs, individuals, communities, ecosystems, and at the planetary scale. We witness these dynamics in activities of care in our neighbourhoods, when we heal from illness or injury, when trees unfurl new leaves in spring, and in Earth’s self-regulation of biogeophysical processes. Regenerative dynamics explain how living systems self-organise to create interacting, interdependent networks that build, maintain, repair and reproduce themselves whilst also continuously adapting, innovating, and evolving.


The American biologist and writer Janine Benyus summarised regenerative dynamics succinctly as ‘life creates conditions conducive to life’. This is what a healthy forest does, for example: its life acts to continually create more life and the niches in which it lives. It supports its own integrity through its trees growing and dying, creating space and resources for other plants, animals, fungi, and so on. A forest simultaneously supports life beyond itself, regenerating the air, climate, water, and nutrients that wider ecosystems also need.


Secondly, there are already countless examples around the world of human communities, initiatives and organisations aligning or realigning their activities with these regenerative processes of life – across a huge range of scales.


Such efforts don’t tend to make the headlines. But they are hugely important, hopeful and inspiring. Examples like India’s remarkable Navdanya seed-sharing network, the Global Ecovillage Network, Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest Agreement, the Antarctic Rights campaign, and Unearthodox, to name just a tiny handful. Many Indigenous communities worldwide have preserved regenerative ways of life for millennia; to this day, many of the world’s remaining biodiversity hotspots are under the stewardship of Indigenous peoples.


So what does this mean for those trying to nurture regenerative dynamics?


Firstly, it requires us to become more attuned to the regenerative dynamics around us. Apply conceptual lenses and frameworks to help us see in a new way. Reconnect ourselves to nature. Gain lessons and inspiration from the wealth of regenerative case studies around the world. Get involved with a local regenerative initiative.


Secondly, it means finding ways to bring those dynamics into the work we do in a deep and authentic way, and how to bring others on the journey with us.


Ecocentric Futures has produced two guides to help you with both of these aspects.


An introduction to regenerative dynamics provides conceptual entry points into recognising and understanding regenerative dynamics, as well as a global tour of 25 regenerative initiatives and organisations.


Tools for regenerative practice, meanwhile, offers a suite of 30 practical frameworks, exercises and methods for bringing a regenerative orientation into collective action.


Together, we hope that these guides make regenerative dynamics more tangible, and inspire you to weave them back into your life.
